Published: Apr 29, 2022

Speaking at the Analytical Cannabis Expo East Online 2020 back in October, Marc Privitera, Principle at PreProcess explored the current status of sample preparation techniques in cannabis analysis.

As the cannabis industry continues to develop different procedures to differing level of detail have developed for various legal and commercial performance parameter tests for various industry products. Analytical testing is made up of three distinct operations performed in series: sample taking, sample preparation, and finally machine testing. Each step is performed by a variety of practitioners with variability in training and experience. Taking a sample from a field is very different than taking a sample from a CBD infused chocolate bar. Some sample taking points have regulatory requirements, some of the requirements leave much to interpretation. Some sample points are purely commercial, but the value of product in the supply chain depends upon these methods. Different sample preparation techniques exist throughout the industry. The talk will outline the current status and the need for coordination and standardization of the details in the procedures within the industry in order to develop credible, accurate and precise data
