Fast, Easy, and Accurate Measurement of Cannabinoids and Terpenes in Cannabis Biomass, Extracts, and Distillates by Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy

Speaking at The Science of Cannabis Testing 2021 online symposium, Brian Smith, PhD, CEO & Chief Technical Officer, of Big Sur Scientific presented his talk on mid-infrared spectroscopy for cannabis products.

Abstract: Cannabis is medicine…test it like medicine! The pharmaceutical industry testing paradigm is to test in-house all raw materials, after each manufacturing step, and final products. The cannabis industry needs to adopt this paradigm to make cannabis medicines that are safe, effective, and profitable. To this end we have developed a small, rugged, portable mid-infrared spectrometer that accurately measures cannabinoid and terpene profiles in cannabis biomass, extracts, distillates, and final products. The spectrometer requires no messy or expensive sample preparation, is pre-calibrated so it works out of the box, and features push button operation so anyone can use it. How the analyser works, is calibrated and validated, and how it has already benefitted many cannabis businesses around the world will be discussed.
