Determining the Shelf Stability of Cannabinoid Products

Published: Feb 15, 2023

Study design is critical in shelf-life studies. It is important to consider product formulation, packaging and the parameters that should be evaluated. The tests conducted should include any labelled ingredients like CBD or preservatives, stability indicating characteristics like pH and, where appropriate, microbial attributes. There are many ways to obtain shelf stability data and the design should take into account the acceptable level of risk and budget. Screening studies can be used to generate limited data that can group similar products together and subsequently reduce cost. The use of screening studies or accelerated stability studies can accelerate future product development by creating a baseline to compare with new products. A well-designed study will reduce cost and generate sufficient data to support the shelf stability of a range of current and future products.
