Broad Spectrum and Isolate Production from Hemp by Centrifugal Partition Chromatography

Centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) is a liquid-liquid partition chromatography technique that provides an efficient, streamlined workflow for natural product purification. Hemp, grown primarily for industrial purposes, encompasses cultivars of Cannabis sativa that are low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content.

Following harvest, extraction, and optional processing steps, a mixture of cannabinoids including THC remains in the valuable product. CPC is then employed to accomplish several key goals: (1) remove THC to produce broad-spectrum CBD product, (2) purify CBD to produce >99% pure CBD isolate, and (3) purify minor cannabinoids (CBN, CBG, etc.) to produce >99% pure isolates.

Key advantages of the liquid-liquid partitioning of compounds within the CPC system include: minimal product loss; recycling of solvents to keep operating costs low compared to other chromatography techniques; and flexibility to develop new methods to match shifting goals in an ever-changing market.
