Accurate and Simple Quantification of THC and CBD in Beverages Containing Micro and Nano Emulsions

Published: Apr 06, 2022

Accurate quantifications of THC and CBD by LC-UV in drinks like beer, iced tea, sodas and fruit drinks can be negatively impacted by several factors. The first issue lies with the stability of cannabinoids. Analytes like THC and CBD tend to bind to the inner surface of bottles and cans. Secondly, because of their low solubility in water, cannabinoids require the presence of oils and emulsifiers to keep them into solution during storage and shipping. Oils and emulsifiers like palm oil, glycerin, lecithin and polysorbate 80 impact accuracy and tend to contaminate, buildup and clog LC columns.  Finally, concentrations of cannabinoids in beverages are much lower compared to other edibles, which requires an optimized extraction procedure for robust and accurate quantification.

In this short talk, you will learn tips and tricks for simple and fast cleanup of infused beverages. As a result, you will increase your lab productivity and put a stop to strange and unpredictable results. Who said that potency testing had to be painful?
